Goodreads Summary:

Sixteen-year-old Liza Johnson takes fangirl to a whole new level of crazy when she decides to take dating advice from her literary hero: Jane Austen.

With the help of her best friends, Liza sheds her ancient-speak and complete Austen wardrobe for something a bit more modern in an attempt at finding her very own Mr. Darcy.

Enter Will, the new kid and Liza’s Darcy incarnate. Add her BFF’s ex to mix and the sexy Brit who kisses with an accent, and Liza is in trouble.

So, what’s a girl to do? Without her mom to go to relationship advice, Liza turns to the only person she can truly trust with matters of the heart via her mother’s copy of COMPLETED WORKS OF JANE AUSTEN.

It’s too bad Austen’s heroines have never played Spin the Bottle or Seven Minutes in Heaven. Liza’s determined to find her true Austen-esque happy ending, but if she can’t trust herself instead of books, she just might end up in her own tragic love story.

My Thoughts:

Finding Mr. Darcy: High School Edition is a cute, fun read, especially for fans of Jane Austen. It’s full of first love and misunderstandings and fangirling and figuring out how to make sense of the things you love. Liza, a self-professed Jane Austen fangirl, gets the surprise of a lifetime when she’s told she’s won a trip to England to study British writers. And it just so happens that the hot new boy at school is going too. It’s the perfect contemporary set up for a Jane Austen mash-up. With lots of Austen references and quotes—not to mention Liza’s fun JA tees—it will speak to readers whose copies of P&P and Emma and all the rest are as tattered as Liza’s.

The story moves quickly, and while it frustrated me in a few parts, I was happy to see how it all worked out in the end, and that Liza picked the boy who I’d been rooting for all along.

Cover Reveal: Hemlock Veils

Hemlock Veils

by Jennie Davenport

Release Date: 11/25/14

Swoon Romance

Summary from Goodreads:

When Elizabeth Ashton escapes her damaging city life and finds herself in the remote town of Hemlock Veils, Oregon, she is smitten by its quaint mystery; but the surrounding forest holds an enchantment she didn’t think existed, and worse, a most terrifying monster. The town claims it vicious and evil, but Elizabeth suspects something is amiss. Even with its enormous, hairy frame, gruesome claws, and knifelike teeth, the monster’s eyes speak to her: wolf-like and ringed with gold, yet holding an awareness that can only be human. That’s when Elizabeth knows she is the only one who can see the struggling soul trapped inside, the soul to which she is moved.

Secretly, Elizabeth befriends the beast at night, discovering there’s more to his story and that the rising of the sun transforms him into a human more complex than his beastly self. Elizabeth eventually learns that his curse is unlike any other and that a single murderous act is all that stands between him and his freedom. Though love is not enough to break his curse, it may be the only means by which the unimaginable can be done: sacrifice a beauty for the beast.

About the Author

Though Jennie Davenport was raised throughout the Midwest, she now lives in the little desert mining town of Bagdad, Arizona, where six guys beg for her constant attention: a husband, three young, blond sons, a German shepherd with a name much mightier than his disposition (Zeus), and a black cat named Mouse. When she isn’t trying to run her home with as little casualties as possible, Jennie loves snuggling with her family, laughing with her friends, delving into brilliant entertainment of any vein, and playing outside. Despite the way being a writer is in her blood, and the wheels of her writerly mind are constantly turning, Jennie likes to think that in another life, she would have been a Broadway star. Or an American Idol finalist.

Jennie lives for the fall, and not just because of her adoration for the NFL (Go Broncos!). In her perfect world, she would have the springs, summers, and falls of Colorado, and the winters of Arizona—someplace where the climate and weather would allow her to go on a trail run all year round. But even though she prefers the pines and mountains, she is a devoted fan of all nature, from sandy beaches to woodsy cabins, and all are her greatest inspiration. She believes nature is one of the best healing remedies, with a magic all its own.

Jennie’s passion for writing is the way she survives, and is as vital to her sanity as oxygen, caffeine, food, and music. Even before she began writing it, well-told, original, and character-driven romance was always her weak spot. Add the paranormal or magical realism element and she may never make it back to reality.

by Stephanie Wardrop

Release Date: 10/14/14

Swoon Romance

Summary from Goodreads:

Happily-ever-after isn’t as happy or forever as Jane Austen makes it look. Just something Georgia Barrett learns when her sharp tongue costs her the only guy she’s ever really cared about: Michael Endicott.

Determined to move on, Georgia lands the lead role in the school’s fall musical. But to survive on stage, she’ll need to learn to express herself without her protective shield of snark. She soon discovers being honest with others means being honest with herself, and the truth is she’s still in love with Michael.

But from the looks of Michael’s new girlfriend, Georgia isn’t the only one who tried to move on. Apparently, some people are just better at it than others. And when Michael and his girlfriend join the cast of the fall musical, Georgia finds out that snark and stage fright are the least of her worries…

Fairytale Love: Review of Don’t Fall (and a giveaway!)

Don't-Fall tour banner

A few weeks ago, Tangled came on TV. I hadn’t seen the Disney version of Rapunzel before, but knowing Don’t Fall, a Rapunzel retelling, was coming out I decided to watch it to get up to speed on the mythology of this fairytale. I didn’t need to, of course, because Rachel Schieffelbein is so good at creating loveable characters and putting them in situations that make me really care what happens to them. But for me, it was fun to see how she’d taken that base story of a girl kept apart from the world falling in love for the first time and made it all her own.

Anya is such a sweet girl, full of life and curious about the world. She lives in the shadow of her adopted mother’s murdered daughter and willingly complies with her mom’s super-strict rules in an effort to win her mom’s affections. She never steps a toe out of line. Then she meets Zander.

Zander is an adorable nerdy boy, just waiting for his life start when he goes to college in a few months. He’s bookish and a little awkward (and is smart enough to use cupcakes to woo Anya!). And two days a week at the library are just not enough time with the girl he’s quickly falling for.

As their relationship grows, taking them out of the library and into a cupcake shop and a clearing in the woods behind Anya’s house, they both start piecing together who they want to be, as individuals and as a couple. But Anya has to decide is whose heart she is more willing to break: Zander’s or her mother’s. Too bad her heart might shatter no matter what decision she makes.

Anya’s story of growing up and fighting for the ones she loves will tug at your heart and make you want to hug your book when you’re through reading.
